Abstrak

Clove leaves (Syzigium aromaticum) and ceremai leaves (Phyllanthus acidus)contain active compounds namely phenol group compounds, for exaple polyphenols,tannins, and flavonoids which have antibacterial effects because they can inhibit thegrowth of Streptococcus mutansbacteria that cause dental caries. The purpose of thisstudywas to determine the effectiveness of the inhibitory power ofclove leaves (Syzigiumaromaticum)and ceremai leaves (Phyllanthus acidus) and to find out which are moreeffective to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria. The experimental studyused disc diffusion method with several extract concentrations of 30%, 40%, 50%, and60% carried out at the Delima Husada Gresik Laboratory of Health Analyst in July 2018.The results showed that clove leaf extract (Syzigium aromaticum) and ceramai leafextract(Phyllanthus acidus) can inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria. Thebiggest inhibitory zone in clove leaf extract (Syzigium aromaticum) is at a concentrationof 30%e with an average inhibition zone of 16mm. In the largest inhibition zone of(Phyllanthus acidus) axtract at a concentration of 30% whit an average inhibition zone of8 mm.This proves that clove leaves are more effective than ceremai leaves to inhibit thegrowth of Streptocoocus mutans bacteria.
